Why do you need a multivitamin for better fertility and how to choose a good one?
Do you really need to take supplements when trying to conceive?
If you don’t really care about why and just want to skip to the bottom line, the short answer is - absolutely.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about getting most of your nutrients from real food. But read through this post and you’ll understand the necessity of additional supplementation, even if your diet is extra healthy.
Here’re some reasons:
Soil. Because of the modern farming practices, our soil is very depleted and missing many important vitamins and minerals. So the crops that grow on this soil, grow depleted as well. Even if you’re eating organic food only (yes you’re definitely getting more nutrients than from conventional produce), you still get less nutrients than a few decades ago.
Herbicides and pesticides. They also deplete the plants from the vital nutrients, vitamins and minerals. If you didn’t switch to organic yet, maybe it’s time to consider.
Medications. Some of the medications deplete your body from essential micronutrients. Birth control is one of those pills. It’s found that the birth control pill depletes your body from vitamin D, iron, protein, zinc, magnesium, folate and some other B vitamins. As you can guess, all of those nutrients play a significant role in your health, fertility and reproductive functioning.
Stress. Something that is probably common to all human beings on this planet. We might all be different, but we all experience stress. Stress depletes all nutrients, especially vitamins B and C.
Alcohol and smoking impact levels of your micronutrients as well.
So, in fact, you can eat plenty of food and still be undernourished. You can even eat fruits and vegetables all day long and suffer from malnutrition these days.
When you’re getting ready for pregnancy it’s highly important to prep and nourish your body for ‘baking’ your baby inside for 9 months. It’s vital for your fertility, it’s vital for healthy conception, it’s vital for the baby and it’s vital for the postpartum period. The baby feeds off of your reserves, so when you start depleted, not only your baby might not get enough, but you will end up being completely out of balance after the birth.
So, no matter at what point you’re on your journey, start from a good quality multivitamin to support your body.
How to choose?
My first choice will always be vitamins and minerals sourced from whole foods.
Make sure also to check the entire list of the ingredients. Try to avoid the products with too many binders and fillers - these are hard to digest, do not provide any nutritional value and usually decrease the quality and the benefits of the product.
These are the most harmful and toxic fillers used in supplement industry that i recommend avoiding entirely:
Titanium Dioxide
Magnesium Silicate
Hydrogenated Oil
Colouring: Red 40, Blue 2, Yellow 5.
Artificial Flavours
Lead, Mercury and PCBs
